VALÉRIE VIVANCOS - Monkey Brainwave

from SYNTHESIS VOL.1 by International Female Composers

/

about

Under her real name, Valérie Vivancos completed a fine art degree at Chelsea School of Art (London), studied at SFAI (San Francisco), ran art workshops in Brazil (Rio, Recife, Sao Paulo), Invited people to sleep in an underground bunker (Copenhagen) performed spatialised music in a Planetarium (Poitiers), on a boat (Danube), created sounds for the answering machine of the Palais de Tokyo (Paris) and is currently a research student at the Sorbonne University (Paris). She is co-founder of projects focused on sound and art including the duo OttoannA and the Double Entendre editions. Based in Paris, she regularly works for the GRM and other experimental music organisations. She also writes and translates literary, poetic and theoretical texts.

Her work is focused on composition, situations and writing protocols that interweave life and fiction and collect 'curious' experiences.

The material for this track was recorded in March 2013 in Khao Sok National Park's jungle (south of Thailand). The eerie gibbons chants and swarming of insects have been enhanced to create a 'natural' trance, a repetitive 'brainwave'. Field recordings are stretched into a compositional form through the layering and thickening of sounds. This primal perception echoes Cage's idea (borrowed from Kant) that “there are two things that don’t have to mean anything, one is music and the other is laughter. Don’t have to mean anything that is, in order to give us deep pleasure”. To be played in a loop for full effect.
