about

Kaho Cheung (South Korea) has been working in various fields related to music technology, with expertise in sonic arts. field-recording, audio post-production and music for theatre from Brecht to experimental stage. As a mixing-and-mastering engineer, he partnered with Thai composer Narong Prangcharoen for more than ten years in his albums featuring contemporary orchestral music, currently working on the third album which will be released by Albany Records in New York.

Cheung’s research interest is central to sonic arts based on human and mechanical sounds in urban areas. His field-recordings and soundscape works were based on DSD 1-bit recordings, binaurally captured from metro (subway) systems across twelve major cities including New York, Tokyo, London, Berlin, Athens, Helsinki, Stockholm, Hong Kong and Bangkok.

His electroacoustic music received prizes and performances in major competitions, including the first prize in the Musica Nova in Prague, honorable mention in the Luigi Russolo Competition in Italy and selected work in the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) 2011, with performances across Europe. He was the recipient of the Gerald Oshita Memorial Fellowship in 2009. Past residencies included the Sumu Residency at the Gallery Titannik in Finland, the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in California and the composer residency at Elektronisches Studio Technische Universität Berlin. He has been the sound engineer in the Thailand International Composition Festival (TICF) since 2006, working with contemporary music performers and composers around the globe.

After his studies at the Novars Research Centre, he held teaching positions at the Hong Kong Baptist University and the Macao Polytechnic Institute. Currently teaching music technology at Mahidol University in Thailand, he studied at Hong Kong Baptist University, The University of Missouri-Kansas City (U.S.A.), and The University of Manchester (U.K.).

An interrupted prayer (2015) features the urban sounds collected from some major events in Hong Kong and Macau, including the Formula 3 Grand Prix, a peaceful silent night at Catedral Igreja Da Sé, Yuen Po Street Bird Garden where the caged birds were screaming loud, the 7.1 protest happened two years before Umbrella Revolution, the live Chinese folk music played for ghosts during the Hunary Ghost Festival, and the automated Beethoven music looped for the blinds at Kowloon Tong Railway Station. Navigating through the very contrasting emotions associated with the mechanical and human sounds, the soundscape embraces some key localities found in the two cantonese-speaking cities, with traces of colonial influence and recent social unrest.
