Jen Kutler is a sound based performer, sound artist and maker. She modifies found objects that are cultural signifiers of power, gender and intimacy to create atypical instruments for her performances. Her current performance project, My Wife, features many of her instruments incorporated with immersive field recordings to explore common and discrepant experiences of familiar sound environments.

Generating Values is a sound piece about discrepant experiences of the same stimuli and how they relate to social conduct.

The piece is recorded with two participants who are presented with the same audio content at the same time in headphones. The content includes things like outdoor ambience, speech, high heels, a football game and many other commonly experienced sounds.

The participants are also wearing EEG sensors which measure the electrical signals in the brain. Different types of activity and mental states dictate the values that are produced and those values are then interpreted to manipulate those original sounds.

The sounds are manipulated with several different types of effects including resonance, delay, distortion, pitch shifting, speed and granular manipulation. Over 40 parameters are mapped for each participant.
The first participant's audio is played through the left channel and the second participant's audio is played through the right channel so that similarities and differences between the two can be heard.

During the course of the piece, the data stream from those values are smoothed, a process of removing "noise" from data to help patterns emerge.

The smoothing mimics the development of social standards specific to each individual based on their past experience and how those standards influence the way a person experiences the world in the present.
