ERIC WONG - Shepard Train Of Do-Re-Mi

from by Various - International Compilation

My track is called “Shepard Train of Do-Re-Mi”, in C key, based on the song "Do-Re-Mi" from Sound of Music, in four stanza, first played in original melody, second improvisational, on the third stanza I played with the audio illusion phenomenon "Mysterious Melody", and on the fourth stanza an improvisational version of the third one.

Along with an ascending Shepard tone, which is also based on C, as a quasi-drown to the melody line, as a different representation of the idea of the song “Do-Re-Mi”, which is to give an idea of what an octave is like to music learners, but instead of showing it in a diatonic fashion, the tone is showing it in a continuous way, along with a good representation of how the audio illusion is like.

A track of sampled sound in the subway system in Hong Kong, where I spent a significant time of my life in, is captured and played along. As the ascending sound during the train’s acceleration gives a similar perception to listeners, it gives an interesting parallel to the other two layers. What is more appealing about the subway track is that the train announcement within is made in three languages (Cantonese, Mandarin, and English), which I found extensively long but is unique to the city’s everyday life.
