Ursula Häse, vocalist and theremin player

Currently I am a versatile vocalist, theremin player and performer, working in various formations and projects. In my musical work I explore diverse and unusual ways to use the voice, I play the theremin as a melodic instrument and use it as a CV-controller for my analog effect equipment. Inspired by contemporary music and free improvisation, I merge traditional vocal music elements with experimental electronic sounds to an extraordinary sound mixture.

I am interested to work at the interface between the body (vocal expression, movement) and electronics (theremin, analog effects). As an experimental vocalist my body is my instrument, as an electronic musician I am looking for ways to involve the body more into the music production and create a more 'organic' electronic music. My actual setting consisting of my voice, the theremin (as an instrument and as a CV-controller), analog electronics and a looper allows me a close interlocking between acoustic sounds (vocal expression, field recording) and electronic sounds. Also it gives me the possibility to react very spontaneously to dancers, performers and other musicians.

My musical roots lie in the Swiss folk and yodel music. As a child and youngster I learned to play the piano, the cross flute and the saxophone, then the voice became my passion and main instrument. From the very beginning I am interested in experimental and improvised music, which I realized with my first trio 'out of rail'.

After my education as a carpenter and working two years on the construction site, I got my second qualification as a breath and voice teacher. Some years ago I discovered the theremin and learnt to play it autodidactic. From then on I worked with analog electronic equipment. Beside my artistic work I give vocal education seminars since many years.
