MOLLY MACLEOD - Sagittal Suture

from FEMALE IDENTIFIED PRODUCERS by International Compilation

about

I am currently in Lisbon for a 3 month residency at Roundabout LX, focussing on the sonic properties of huge indoor reservoirs and underground aqueduct tunnels. The track I have submitted is a piece I have created using field recordings collected in Mae d'Agua, a cathedral-like reservoir in Lisbon. Literally translated as 'Mother Of Water' my research and work has lead me to see the disused aqueduct system here in Lisbon as a sleeping beast, lying in wait under the city with the underground tunnels as her veins and arteries spreading out below the ground and the reservoirs as her pooling lividity. To illustrate this I have used patterns taken from the human body and transposed these in to melody lines, in this piece I have concentrated on the sagittal suture lines found on skulls I photographed in the Geological Museum of Lisbon. The field recordings are mostly collected using a hydrophone submerged within the reservoir. I have also created a detailed graphic score for this composition. I am currently working on 2 more compositions and accompanying graphic scores for which I will be creating interactive sculptures where I can use water to trigger elements of the compositions for live performances.

I am regularly updating my blog mollymacleodartist.tumblr.com with updates of how my residency work is progressing.
Previously my work has been focussed on community engagement projects in various galleries and arts venues in North West England with an organisation started by me and fellow artist Kate Royle, called Sonic-Bloom. We develop and deliver tailor made sonic and visual arts engagement experiences using interactive technology encouraging creative thinking and ideas-led learning

I have also been performing experimental music shows under the name Tooms for the past 6 years. Having played support slots for acts such as Giant Swan, Thomas Truax, Chicaloyoh, TVAM & Paddy Steer. I also embarked upon a tour of europe in September 2016, playing shows in unusual spaces from an industrial estate to a bike shop.

'Ambient industrial squall; the ethereal ghost in the machine. Tooms wraps her sound in a chrysalis of glistening perpetuality – a lamenting siren call of regret. Spectral guitar drone and haunting, layered vocals/moans churn out amongst ambiguous field recordings and toy instruments distorted in to obscurity.' -Simon Catling, The Skinnny
